Toltec

Prominent thousands of years ago, the Toltec were known throughout southern Mexico as "women and men of knowledge." Anthropologists have spoken of the Toltec as a nation or a race, but, the Toltec were scientists and artists who formed a society to explore and conserve the spiritual knowledge and practices of the ancient ones. The Toltec considered science and spirit to be one and the same since all energy, whether material or ethereal, was derived from the one source and influenced by the same universal laws.

The Toltec came together as masters (naguals) and students (jaguars) at Teotihuacan, the ancient city of pyramids outside Mexico City known as the place where "Man becomes God." Here, in order to realize the promise of the work to transcend the realm of ordinary human awareness and attain their personal freedom, the apprentices studied the three Toltec masteries: Awareness, Transformation, and Intent. The students had to have the courage to face the truth of who they were and, through that knowing, change their way of life.

During the times of the pre-colonial and colonial wars in Mexico, the Toltec masters went underground, passing the knowledge on in unbroken chains of Teachers and Students. In recent years, the wisdom of this tradition has resurfaced in the modern culture at large. At this time of unprecedented freedom of expression and openness to the essential truth of many spiritual traditions, Naguals (masters) of the Toltec path have begun to share the message with the public, making this powerful path to freedom available to everyone.

Modern Toltecs teach the path to freedom. Through the Mastery of Awareness, the Mastery of Transformation, and the Mastery of Intent, the sacred warrior learns to harness her own power and will to create a dream based out of love and abundance, rather than scarcity and fear.

One modern Toltec Nagual and holder of the Eagle-Knight lineage, is don Miguel Ruiz. His simple yet powerful teachings have been published in books such as The Four Agreements and The Mastery of Love. For more information about the modern Toltec teachers, see the Toltec Links below.
